Youths condemn Niger/D Govs over approval of $1bn ECA Fund

Protest

ABUJA- YOUTHS under the auspices of Niger Delta Youth Development Congress, NDYC, yesterday, condemned governors from the Niger Delta region over the recent approval of $1billion from the Excess Crude Account, ECA, as demanded by President Muhammadu Buhari, to prosecute the fight against Boko Haram insurgency. This was contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator, NDYC, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, where they accused the Buhari-led government of failure of not fulfilling its promises to the people in the Niger Delta region who have patiently waited and expected holistical development for the region. Uwejeyan also stated their position over the approval of the $1bn after their emergency meeting held in Port Harcourt on Thursday. He said: “The Niger Delta Youth Congress, NDYC, held an emergency meeting in Port Harcourt on Thursday 21 December 2017 to conduct a critical review on the approved $1 billion to combat a ‘defeated Boko haram’ and the purported plans to extend the tenure of the current board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC. “We want to succinctly state that the federal government’s persuasion of the governors’ approval of $1 billion to combat an already defeated Boko Haram is a political miscalculation that is ill-timed and politically concocted to serve self motivated interest obviously for the 2019 general elections and should be highly resisted. “We therefore call on all well meaning Niger Deltans representatives in the National Assembly and Nigerians in general to shun ethno-religious sentiments and rise up from mediocrity to jointly resist every moves to siphon our commonwealth for desperate political ambitions as enough is enough. “We also condemn in strong terms the hypocritical role played by our Governors in the Niger Delta region in supporting the approval of the said sum for combating a technically defeated Boko Haram.” Meanwhile, according to the group there were alleged moves by the federal government to extend the tenure of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, board and cautioned that the move might create undue tension in the region, therefore should not go on with it. “We also vehemently condemn any attempt to extend the impunity currently sailing in the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, by extending the tenure of the current board. “We urge the federal government not to create an unnecessary tension and adhere to the policy of rotation that has existed in the NDDC for the sake of peace and posterity. “The NDYC believes that it is not too late for our President to shun hypocrites, dismiss incompetent players and do the right thing in order not to re-earn the trust and support of Nigerians rather than take the option of stockpiling public funds for election gains”, he added. He also urged the federal government to listen to the voice of reason and fulfill its promises of developing the Niger Delta region in order to avert looming crises that could cripple the economy and take the nation back to the dark days of recession
