NDDC Embarks on Cleaning of Major Towns in Edo


As part of efforts to have a cleaner environment during the Yuletide and New Year celebration, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has embarked on series of cleaning exercise in Benin City, and other towns of Edo State.

During the cleaning exercise, the commission’s Head of Environment Department, Awo Osagie who monitored the event, commended its management for embarking on such practice.

Osagie who was elated that both youths and women engaged to carry out the exercise, were properly remunerated, added that the exercise has boosted the socio-economic lives of the people within the areas covered.

To ensure smooth cleaning exercise, those engaged in the cleaning job were kitted with helmet, nose cover, rain-boot and hand gloves.

Areas covered during the period include; Oba Market, Ekiosa Market, Lagos Street and New Benin and Ologbo all in Benin City, while in Edo Central and Edo North, Auchi, Ekpoma, Uromi, Irrua were among the towns cleaned during the period

Speaking after the event which lasted for eight days, Idikhi Okonedo, a native of Uromi, Esan North-East LG, commended management of NDDC for embarking on the environmental cleaning exercise and called for its sustenance.

Okonedo who said he was impressed to see youths cleaning his town when he travelled home during the festive period, described the exercise as an innovation that should be made an annual ritual in order to given the state a face-lift.

He also solicited that such noble engagement by the NDDC should be extended to other towns in the state.
