Cattle colony: Diette-Spiff warns FG on Niger Delta land

A former military governor of Rivers State, King Alfred Diette-Spiff, has warned the federal government against acquiring land by force in the Niger Delta

The first governor of Rivers State explained that the ownership of land is different in the Niger Delta region unlike some other parts of the country.

Diette-Spiff who is now the Amanayabo of Nembe and Chairman, Bayelsa Traditional Council, said the concept of cattle colonies cannot work in the Niger Delta region.

“In the Niger Delta individuals and families own lands. Therefore, asking state governments and local governments to make lands available for cattle colonies by fiat would not work in the Niger Delta.”

Diette-Spiff who was responding to the Federal Government’s resolve to create cattle colonies across the country said anyone interested in acquiring land to graze cattle must do so responsibly.

He stressed, “If you want land for your business, either for cattle to graze or for any other business should approach the land owners, negotiate and pay for the land. There is no free land in the Niger Delta region
